Lakenna Booker, M.A.T., is the Founder and Head of School for Memphis Merit Academy Charter School, a new college preparatory school focused on literacy in the Parkway Village and Oakhaven communities. Mrs. Booker is a nationally recognized STEM instructional leader and author with over a decade of experience in STEM and urban education. She is a highly motivated educational leader and native Memphian, matriculating elementary, middle and high school in the Parkway Village Community, graduating valedictorian of Sheffield High School, class of 2002.
Mrs. Booker’s wealth of personal and educational experience makes her particularly attuned to both the needs and cultures of her students and their shared community. While attending grade school, Mrs. Booker was allotted the opportunity to attend Phillips Exeter Preparatory School in Exeter, NH through a scholarship by the Rotary Club of Memphis. This dynamic experience changed the perspective for Mrs. Booker, and she vowed to ensure everyone in her path understood their potential. Her passion to motivate others was born.
On August 21, 2018, Memphis Merit Academy Charter School was approved by the Shelby County Schools Board for authorization and opened in the fall of 2019 in Memphis, TN. Memphis Merit Academy opened its doors to 120 kindergarten and first-grade students in the fall of 2019
